Marquis Opera Orchestra Debuts
Bringing ‘Cav’ to Life:
The Marquis Opera Orchestra
There are few works in the operatic repertoire that announce themselves with the raw emotional force of Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana. In just one act, Mascagni takes us into a Sicilian village on Easter morning and unfolds a story of love, jealousy, betrayal, and revenge—with music that has become some of the most recognizable in all of opera.
Next week, audiences in Calgary will have the opportunity to experience this powerful work live as Alberta Vocal Arts presents three fully staged performances of Cavalleria rusticana at the Mamdani Opera Centre on August 26, 28, and 29. The production brings together professional opera singers, a community chorus, and the Marquis Opera Orchestra.
For Marquis Music, this production also represents an important step in the development of one of our ensembles.
The Marquis Opera Orchestra
The Marquis Opera Orchestra was created with a particular purpose: to provide a flexible, professional orchestral ensemble for opera and other vocal and theatrical collaborations.
Opera presents a unique challenge for an orchestra. Unlike a conventional symphonic concert, the orchestra is part of a much larger dramatic machine. It must support the singers, respond to the stage, follow the conductor closely, and shape the drama without overwhelming the voices. At the same time, many productions—particularly those produced by smaller companies—do not require or cannot accommodate a full symphony orchestra.
A reduced orchestra can provide an ideal solution.
The Marquis Opera Orchestra brings professional orchestral musicians together in a configuration designed specifically for this kind of collaboration. The goal isn't simply to make a smaller version of a symphony orchestra. It is to create an ensemble capable of delivering the colour, intensity, flexibility, and precision that opera demands while working within the practical realities of local productions.
Mascagni's Verismo masterpiece
Cavalleria rusticana is one of the defining works of Italian verismo opera—a tradition that sought to bring ordinary people, intense emotions, and dramatic situations onto the operatic stage with unprecedented immediacy.
Mascagni's score is central to that effect. From the famous Intermezzo to the explosive confrontations between Santuzza, Turiddu, Alfio, and Lola, the orchestra is constantly involved in the drama.
The famous Intermezzo is perhaps the work's best-known orchestral passage, but it is only one part of a score filled with vivid colours and remarkable dramatic pacing. The orchestra moves seamlessly between intimate accompaniment, lyrical reflection, and moments of overwhelming intensity.
That makes Cavalleria rusticana an especially rewarding work for a chamber orchestra. Every instrumental voice has a role to play, and the reduced forces bring an unusual transparency to Mascagni's writing.
Building collaborative music in Calgary
One of the things we value most at Marquis Music is collaboration.
Our ensembles are not intended to exist in isolation. The Marquis Chamber Orchestra, Marquis Opera Orchestra, and Marquis Chamber Choir each have their own artistic identities, but they share a common purpose: bringing professional musicians together to create meaningful performances in partnership with other artists and organizations.
The Opera Orchestra is particularly suited to this model. Rather than presenting opera only as a Marquis production, we want to work with the talented singers, directors, producers, choruses, and arts organizations already creating opera in our community.
Cavalleria rusticana is an excellent example of that philosophy in practice.
We are delighted to be part of Alberta Vocal Arts' production and to contribute the orchestral foundation for this extraordinary work.
Experience opera live
Opera remains one of the most complete forms of musical storytelling: voices, orchestra, theatre, movement, and drama all working together in real time.
And Cavalleria rusticana is opera at its most immediate.
This week, the Marquis Opera Orchestra will take its place in the pit—not simply to accompany the singers, but to help tell the story.
We hope you'll join us.
